My beautiful father builds beautiful one of a kind acoustic guitars. He started apprenticing when I was a wee girl, and started building guitars out of our basement in Oshawa. One by one, as the kids moved out, my dad's workshop expanded and took over the entire basement! Now, he makes guitars while overlooking the Miramichi river in New Brunswick. A local program did a spot on him, and I am so proud to share it with you!

Way to go dad!

Minae is the kind of creator that makes me FEEL each and every time i see her perform. It's a powerful thing that she harnesses. She is brave, she is a vessle, a thing connected to that THING that is limitless, free and truly vulnerable. It's amazing to see her transform each and every time she inhabits that space.

I think sometimes it's hard to have those kinds of feelings outside of performing, because then you're just walking down the street. But you have to walk down the street, you do! You have to look at people in the eye and see difference and be challenged and be moved in ways that make you shift your perspective. Shape shifting is a survival mechanism....i'm beginning to see how dangerous it is to stay ridgid in many aspects of life. Maybe difference feels alienating and strange, but maybe it's just your internals shifting a little to make you a little more compassionate to other perspectives.

Last night my very dear friend Zeesy Powers held a screening of her most recent video work, Subjects.

It was an extremely profound experience. In the piece, Zeesy set up drop in amateur counselling sessions which were filmed and edited into 4 episodes. People spoke frankly about their life experiences, hopes and fears. I am so proud of Zeesy. This was a really humane illuminating evening.

The work really speaks for itself. Testify.

This May edition of the WIRE has a cover page article on our labels heads and givers of life, Manda and Britt Brown. So amazing to see their beautiful faces spread across pages of such an amazing magazine. There's some Deeep interview that made it into the article as well. Sooooooo muuch love. I'm kind of orbiting neighbouring nebula's about this stuff, that's how far out it is!

Man i love fanfare. This show ends my 3 month marathon of shows. I've been going non stop and have played some of the best shows of my life. The future holds so much.... stepping in one foot at a time.

Going to the Island tomorrow to record some solo piano jams with Tamara. Dems my roots, my centre, my comfort. Can hardly wait.

How to live well. What that means on a planet that is alive and could shake us off at any moment, I have yet to deduce. I am questing. I watched a documentary on PBS about the fall of Herculaneum which was wiped out when Mt. Vesuvius errupted in 79 AD. It is humbling to look into the lives of these people at the moment of their collective death. We are not so different, not at all. Civilizations disappear. It happens, it has happened, it will happen. So how to live in the face of random chaos and cosmic flexing? There are many things we should be doing to take better care of our planet, but I feel we are living in a time when so many people are lost within themselves. So we have to connect with the light inside and reset our focus.

Watching ma boy Drizzy host the Junos this past weekend was cool! Even more cool, was the Neil Young love fest that ensued. An ambassador of the heart. What Neil had to say during his acceptance speech was quite beautiful and was a really good thing to hear in that context of bru-ha-ha.

"To try to do this humanitarian-y kind of thing, you need to look inside yourself...
And the musicians, they should not worry about helping others, they should focus on their music first, because the music is the language of love and the language that we all feel together. So music makes it happen, and then if you're lucky and you have an opportunity, it's a good thing to do, to go ahead and try to do something yourself. You just gotta look inside yourself and the eyes of your friends, and you'll find the secret of how to be a humanitarian. So, love to you."

Learning how to listen to the microscopic. Ear building exercises. Listening to others, but really listening deep inside myself. Listening to the lives of the past, listening to life that is all around. I feel the cues there. Watching winter fade and spring flower with fresh air and understanding. I want to get close to it and touch what I feel, make it real and try somehow to manifest that feeling.

This age of complexity, miscommunication, is thirsting for simplicity and meaningful reminders of the wonder in which we all live. It is in our eyes.

When we were waiting to check out the space last week, Woody Harelson came walking out of the centre from a rehersal, with a bike slung over his shoulder. He looked and us and gave us all a warm greeting. Coooool celebrity sighting!

The centre is and old Buddhist Monastery built in the 1950's. The congregation grew too large, so they moved to the Northern fringes of Toronto, and some lovely people are using the space as an arts/ culture/ education centre. It's really good vibes.

Hildegard Von Bingen was a mystic, painter, visionary, composer abbess of the Medeival Christian church. This music brings me to the deeepest parts of my inner being. It is medicine, it is healing.

Sean Nos singing is a highly ornamented traditional Irish style of music. There is nothing more beautiful in the world than this clip.

I have no shame in saying Tori was a huge part of my teenage years and really inspired me to the ends of the earth. Unabashadly bawdy and not afraid to look at her own shadow.

Bulgarian music came to me through Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares, and Trio Bulgarka. The tradition of this music is carried by women, and takes a lifetime to master. The matriach.

Happy International Women's day. Holiday's are holidaze, but let's take a moment to think about all the strong beautiful women in our lives that help to hold us up and lead us on the path to the light within.

A few weeks ago the Deeep played at the Earthship for Ayal Senior's Medusa Editions One Year Showcase. Such a special evening, and we were so grateful to be a part of the celebrations and positive vibrations.

Ayal is a serious cameraman, with a serious youtube channel. Check out these clips from the evening's festivities. Note: Stan Krzyzanowski's pinecone wall is given the psyche treatment herein!! Far out!!

Carl's set was INCREDIBLE. It was the perfect soundtrack to view Stan's flip books , the two of them together like a monumental mind melt for serious and for real!

Neil Haverty Jam

This Saturday the Deeep will play as a part of the C is for Cure Fundraiser . This is a very special cause that is near and dear. Our pal Neil Haverty (of Bruce Peninsula) was recently diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, and has undergone chemotherapy treatment over the past month. All the money raised from this event will go directly to help Neil and the Haverty family to lessen the financial burden that inevitably comes with illness.

There are so many amazing people involved in this show.

Steve McKay will make you smile a true smile. He writes madrigals for his wife!

Kathleen, Ivy and Martha bring the divine powers of voice,family and women together.

Beautiful creature D. Cool calm comfort, brings the sunshine wherever she goes.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Open Voice series I held throughout November. To all the vocalists who performed as a part of the series, you left me truly inspired. Now i must learn me some Bulgarian folk songs stat!

I have curated a vocal series beginning tonight at Musideum,an incredibly special world instrument shop nestled into the arts fabric that is 401 Richmond (Richmond & Spadina, Toronto ON). The performances will be taking place every Thursday for the rest of November. $15 with a special $5 admission for students and arts workers.

The future is past. I just returned from journies in Ireland and Scotland. My eyes were fed with a beauty beyond words. The conversation between earth and human went a little like this: lay your body down and give her your heart. She is here to listen.

The Irish family and the Scottish family met to sing songs around the kitchen table as a sort of introduction to one another. Inspired by this tradtion, I have started up a lady's song group for the sharing and gathering of song called Ladies in the Round. Stay tuned for more info!

Mitch Fillion is a great guy. He spends loads of time and energy filming musicians in their element, amongst the elements. We were lucky enough to do a spot for him a few weeks back. We got yelled at for trying to shoot amongst flowers by St. James cathedral. So, like good old fashioned urbanites, we took it to the concrete and let the warmth of our souls do the talking, southern style.

Check out Mitch's site for a slew of helpings. Also, let it be known this guy does all the leg work on this project that includes funding. What a major supporter or local music. Mad respect.

Sunday August 8th i will be playing with my Continental Drifters at a new hot spot,Korova Milkbar. Other acts are TBA.

Colin and Brandon are my drifters. They also have their own band called Not the Wind, Not the Flag. They are cosmic travellers and their music is free. We all aim to be.. so take a listen and take the trip.

Al Purdy Project

Felicity williams is a blow your face off type of talent. The lady has chops on chops, and a vocal range that climbs to the highest of mountain tops unleshing the most exhaulted of melodies. I am lucky to be doing some singing on her "Al Purdy Project" wherein Felicity has taken a selection of poems from Purdy's "Naked with summer in your mouth" and turned them into compositions entirely her own.
